September is announced as Recovery Month



WHEREAS the Board of Chosen Freeholders of the County of Passaic is aware that the month of September is National Recovery Month and this year’s theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery; Visible, Vocal, Valuable;” and

WHEREAS behavioral health is an essential part of health and one’s overall wellness, and prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can recover from substance use and mental disorders; and

WHEREAS all people have the fundamental and inherent value to be accepted and treated with respect, human dignity and worth; and

WHEREAS individuals should have access to fully participate in community life including economic advancement and prosperity; fair and decent housing; quality education; positive opportunities to benefit from and contribute to material, cultural, and social progress; and

WHEREAS it is critical to educate our policymakers, friends and family members, health care providers, and businesses that substance use and mental disorders are treatable, and that people should seek assistance for these conditions, with the same urgency as they would any other health condition; and

WHEREAS all Americans have the opportunity to access provisions within the Affordable Care Act and Mental Health Parity and Addictions Equity Act aimed to improve physical and emotional health while ensuring people will receive the care they need at a more reasonable cost; and

WHEREAS more people achieve long-term recovery, and learn how recovery positively benefits the Nation’s overall well-being, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, the State of New Jersey and the County of Passaic invite all residents to participate in this year’s events; and

WHEREAS the New Jersey Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, the Passaic County Municipal Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse, the Passaic County Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services, and the Passaic County Department of Human Services have joined up with local treatment and prevention providers, such as Eva’s Village, Straight & Narrow, and Turning Point, and local businesses such as Gellotti, who are sponsoring the Passaic County 5th Annual Recovery Walk to raise awareness about substance use, to celebrate individuals in recovery and to acknowledge the work of treatment and recovery service providers; and

WHEREAS the Passaic County 5thAnnual Recovery Walk will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2015 in Paterson starting at 77 Hamilton Street and continuing to Pennington Park where there will be music, food, and various sports activities;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED by the Board of Chosen Freeholders of the County of Passaic that it hereby proclaims the month of September as RECOVERY MONTH IN PASSAIC COUNTY and urges its residents to participate in the walk.
