(Passaic County, NJ) - On Saturday, April 2, 2016 the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Passaic County Public Housing Agency hosted the third annual Family Self Sufficiency Breakfast at La Neve’s in Haledon.

In addition to providing rental subsidies to low income families throughout the County, the Housing Agency administers a Family Self Sufficiency Program for its clients. The Program guides residents through a five year period which focuses on training, education and employment to reach economic self-sufficiency. The program also provides the opportunity to accrue monies which are paid to the participant upon successful completion of the program.

The breakfast honored eleven recent graduates who received a total of $107,380 upon graduation from the program. The keynote speaker this year was the Honorable Bernice Toledo, Passaic County Surrogate. Freeholders Bruce James and Cassandra “Sandi” Lazzara were also in attendance to present certificates to the graduates in acknowledgement of their achievements.

Representatives from New Hope Community Ministries of Prospect Park and Rutgers Extension were present to speak about their services. Dress for Success of Morris County provided suits to clients in need of clothing for job interviews.

Participants from the program offered massages, a fitness exercise routine, and a picture booth during the morning. Numerous local merchants provided gifts for a raffle drawing.

“The Family Self Sufficiency Program has grown in the last several years to include more services and support to its participants,” said Passaic County Freeholder Director Theodore “T.J.” Best.

Freeholder Bruce James added, “The testimonies of the residents are evidence of the success that these families achieve through both their diligence and the guidance of the Housing Agency’s program.”

Housing Agency Director Janice DeJohn stated, “The Family Self Sufficiency Program could not be successful without the support of the Freeholder Board, the Partners that provide services, and the work of my staff. I would also like extend many thanks to the attendees who brought household items which were distributed to a local veteran in need. It is a tradition of the breakfast to not only focus on yourself, but also to lend a helping hand to neighbors in your community.”
