Passaic County offers cleanup grants to local non-profits

The Passaic County Office of Solid Waste & Recycling Programs is reminding the public about the availability of Clean Communities mini-grant funding for non-profit organizations within Passaic County, in order to help keep Passaic County clean and litter-free for all of its citizens. According to Nina Seiden, Passaic County’s Solid Waste & Recycling Programs Manager and Clean Communities Coordinator, in order to promote this litter abatement program, grants of up to $500 each are available to non-profit organizations which participate in a cleanup of an area such as a park, stream or neighborhood which has become unsightly and unsanitary due to an abundance of litter, which can include graffiti, storm debris and other unwanted trash. Previous participants have included church groups, sororities and fraternities, and boy scouts.

Grant funds are designed to cover expenses associated with these cleanups such as bags, gloves, tools, and shirts. Non-profit groups are required to fill out an application and must photograph the area to be cleaned before and after the event. Applications must be submitted prior to the cleanup in order to first be approved and accepted into the Clean Communities grant program. Among the requirements, participants must be at least 14 years of age, and non-profit organizations must provide proof of liability insurance. In order to obtain a Clean Communities grant application and a complete list of program guidelines, please call Passaic County’s Solid Waste & Recycling Office at (973) 305-5738.
