Freeholders honor Jose Joe Garcia for Hispanic Heritage Month



WHEREAS our Nation is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15, 2016 through October 15, 2016 and in recognition of the outstanding achievements and contributions made by many exceptional Hispanics over the years, the Board of Chosen Freeholders of the County of Passaic deems it fitting and appropriate, at this time, to honor and recognize Jose “Joe” Garcia; and
WHEREAS Jose “Joe” Garcia was born in Humacao, Puerto Rico, he arrived in the City of Passaic in 1956, where he started his business in real estate, he is the father of nine children and has been married to his wife Elba Garcia for the past 37 years; and
WHEREAS Jose “Joe” Garcia, after many years of successful work in the County of Passaic, demonstrated not only a strong acumen for business but also a tremendous heart for his community and became involved in various volunteer efforts to make his city a better place to reside for all; and
WHEREAS Jose “Joe” Garcia was appointed in 1981 as a Commissioner of the Board of Alcoholic Beverage Control where he served for eight years, he was elected in 1989 as Commissioner to the Passaic Board of Education where he served for 12 years, he was elected in 2001 to the Passaic City Council and in 2005, 2009, and 2013 he was re-elected in the same position where he still serves to the present, he is the longest serving consecutive Hispanic elected official in the City of Passaic with over 36 years as an appointed and elected official; and
WHEREAS Jose “Joe” Garcia is a member of the United Puerto Rican Council where he has been involved in initiatives that provided scholarships for Passaic school children to attend college, clothing and other resource contributions to victims of fire, natural disasters and needy families, senior recognition and cultural events, as well as programs to honor and support youth athletic initiatives in the City of Passaic; and
WHEREAS Jose “Joe” Garcia has served as a mentor and friend to countless leaders in the City of Passaic over the past 60 plus years that he has resided in Passaic County, he is consistently recognized by his colleagues, peers, and the community in general for his dedication, honesty and uncompromising loyalty to the City of Passaic; and
WHEREAS Jose “Joe” Garcia is most identified by one specific quality that all who meet and spend time with him quickly recognize, he is a truly humble person with a genuine heart for service and this has always distinguished him over the past 36 years as a person and a community leader not only in the City of Passaic but also in the County of Passaic and the State of New Jersey;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Chosen Freeholders of the County of Passaic publicly honors and recognizes Jose “Joe” Garcia for his many years of work and service in bringing greater education, culture and information to the Passaic County Hispanic and Latino communities.
