Biography of Freeholder Greyson P. Hannigan, Esq.

Greyson P. Hannigan, Esq., was appointed to the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders on June 2, 2008. Freeholder was elected to a full term in November 2008. He is married to Bertha, a counselor and 22-year resident of the City of Paterson and John F. Kennedy High School graduate. They have two sons, Trevor (7) and Sebastian (4). The Hannigan family resides in Paterson and attends St. Luke Baptist Church in Paterson.

Freeholder Hannigan spent the first 13 years of his life in Jamaica, West Indies and immigrated to the United States in 1986, living in Trenton, Montclair and then East Orange, New Jersey. Greyson grew up in a single family home where his mother worked as a Home Health Aide and then in a nursing home until her retirement in 2008.

Freeholder Hannigan graduated from Montclair High School and earned an Undergraduate Degree in Geography-Environmental Studies from Montclair State University and holds a Paralegal Certificate from the University. Freeholder Hannigan attended Montclair State University as an Educational Opportunity Fund Program (EOF) student, where he was active in Student Government Association as a Legislator and Director of Residence Life Affairs on the SGA Executive Board. He was a member of the EOF Human Resources Leadership Development Corp., the Organization of Students for African Unity, (OSAU) and Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity. He was the Founder and the first President of the Caribbean Student Organization (CARIBSO). Freeholder Hannigan was privileged to have been chosen to attend the Washington Center for Internship and Academic Seminars in Washington, DC where he interned at the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s office of Air and Radiation.

The Hannigan received a Juris Doctorate degree from Rutgers University School of Law, Newark. While attending at Rutgers he received the C. Clyde Ferguson Scholarship. He was a member of the Black Law Student Association and was Managing Business/Developmental Editor of the Rutgers Race and the Law review. Freeholder Hannigan was fortunate enough to serve as a Law Clerk in the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Appellate Section writing appellate briefs on behalf of the State of New Jersey. After Law School Hannigan worked in the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office as a State Certified Victim Witness Counselor, aiding the victims of various crimes in Essex County.

Greyson Hannigan was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in December of 1999. From December 1999 to January of 2003, he served as an Assistant Prosecutor in the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office where he tried cases in the Juvenile and Adult Sections and served in the Internal Affairs Unit. In February of 2003, Freeholder Hannigan moved to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office where he worked as an Assistant Prosecutor in the Adult Trial Section prosecuting cases. In 2005, Hannigan moved on to the Passaic County Counsel’s Office, where he worked as an Assistant County Counsel. He subsequently also became the Passaic County Adjuster heading up a department while representing Passaic County throughout the State with cases dealing with the mentally ill. As County Adjuster, he sat on the Passaic County Board of Social Services and Camp Hope Commission as a Commissioner.

Freeholder Hannigan opened his own law practice in 2007. He is very active in his community holding memberships in the Paterson Rotary Club, Paterson Branch of the NAACP, where he served as Legal Redress Chair. He also serves as Treasurer of the Paterson Democratic Club and is an Associate Member of the National Council of Negro Women, Passaic County Chapter. The Freeholder is also a member of Delta Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

From 2008 to 2009, Freeholder Hannigan was the chair to the Public Works and Buildings and Grounds Committee and was a member of the Planning and Economic Development Committee. In 2010, Freeholder Hannigan chairs the Public Works and Buildings and Grounds Committee, Human Services committee and is a member of the Administration, Finance and Personnel Committee.
