Common Cold Information (Rhinovirus)

  • A sore throat and runny nose are typically the first symptoms of a common cold, followed by coughing and sneezing.
    • Other symptoms include water eyes, headaches, and body aches
    • Most people recover within 7-10 days.
  • The most common cause of the cold is rhinovirus which can spread through the air and close personal contact.
  • Prevention tips:
    • Wash hand often with soap and water.
      • If soap and water are not available, use antibacterial hand sanitizer.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
    • Stay away from people who are sick.
  • If you have a cold, you can take these steps to feel better and prevent getting others from getting sick
    • Stay at home and get rest.
    • Drink fluids.
    • Gargle with warm salt water.
    • Avoid close contact with others.
    • Cough and sneeze into a tissue.
    • Wash hand after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.
    • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
    • There is no vaccine for the common cold. Antibiotics will not help cure a cold because they do not work against viruses.
  • Consult your doctor if:
    • You have a temperature higher than 100.4° F
    • Symptoms last for more than 10 days
    • Symptoms that are severe or unusual
