Passaic County Commends First Responders as Wildfire Containment Reaches 90%

Post Date:11/18/2024 10:01 AM

The wildfire affecting New Jersey has been 90% contained, thanks to the tireless efforts of first responders and the collaborative efforts of state, county, and town agencies.

To date, no structures in New Jersey are at risk, and no evacuations or property damage have been reported. This coordinated response has ensured the safety of residents and underscores the dedication of everyone involved.

County Commissioner Orlando Cruz expressed gratitude to the teams working on the frontlines: "On behalf of the residents of Passaic County, I want to express our deepest gratitude to the brave first responders who continue to work tirelessly to combat the forest fires in West Milford and beyond. Your courage, dedication, and selflessness protect not only our natural resources but also the lives and livelihoods of countless families. Thank you for being our unwavering line of defense in the face of danger."

Drought Conditions Increase Fire Risks
The wildfire serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing drought conditions across New Jersey. Below-average rainfall has left the region vulnerable to wildfires, highlighting the importance of water conservation. Residents are encouraged to take proactive steps, including:

  • Allowing lawns to go dormant.

  • Winterizing and shutting off irrigation systems.

  • Using watering cans for essential plants or letting them go dormant.

  • Sweeping sidewalks instead of hosing them down.

  • Choosing commercial car washes that recycle water.

These measures help conserve water and reduce the risks of further wildfire outbreaks.

Continued Collaboration and Vigilance
This wildfire response showcases the strength of collaboration among agencies and the bravery of those working to safeguard communities. Passaic County thanks all responders for their dedication and urges residents to stay informed and support conservation efforts during this critical time.
