According to the FBI, property and mortgage fraud is one of the fastest growing white collar crimes in our country. This can happen by scammers recording fraudulent documents such as fake deeds or liens against property owners. Once a fraudulent document is recorded, the criminal may use your name as collateral on a mortgage or even attempt to sell your home to an unsuspecting buyer.
To address these concerns, The Passaic County Clerk’s Office offers the Property Fraud Warning System to Passaic County’s property owners. This system will serve as an early warning alert of possible fraudulent activity and as a monitoring mechanism to keep track of the filing of legitimate documents once you finish with a property closing, taking out or paying off a mortgage. If you receive a property fraud alert, you can quickly search by Instrument number on the Clerk’s Property Search website here to view the actual document that was recorded.
