The reconstruction of the Spruce Street Bridge included the rehabilitation of the bridge, upgrades at the intersection of Wayne Avenue and Totowa Avenue, and improvements along Front Street.  The bridge reopened in fall 2022.

This project replaced the bridge deck, sidewalks, railings, and lighting.  It also repaired defects on the abutments and piers to greatly extend the life span of the bridge.  The new bridge cross section consists of three travel lanes (12’ to 14’ wide) and two sidewalks (7.5’ wide and 12.4’ wide).  The reconfigured traffic lanes will better serve the vehicular traffic and the widened sidewalks will better serve pedestrians.

Along Front Street, this project repaved and restriped the roadway between Paterson Ave and the bridge.  Closer to the bridge, the sidewalks were replaced, the roadway was converted to a one-way road, and additional on-street parking was added along the river from Paterson Avenue to Wayne Avenue.  Together, these improvements will better serve the residents of this neighborhood.

This project is funded by 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2020 NJDOT Local Bridge Future Needs Grants.
