Home MenuMadison Avenue Corridor Study
The purpose of the Madison Avenue / Commuter Rail Corridor Study is to complete a concept of how the proposed NJ Transit Passaic-Bergen Passenger Service Restoration Project can best serve public interests, stimulate economic activity, enhance pedestrian safety, and coordinate new and existing transit options.
The Passaic-Bergen Passenger Restoration Project will restore passenger rail service between Hawthorne (Passaic County) and Hackensack (Bergen County). There will be a total of nine stations along the line, including five located within the City of Paterson. The restoration of passenger service will offer residents an alternative to automobile travel and will serve as a convenient and economical link to employment, recreational, and educational destinations.
The goal of this study is to develop a concept plan that will result in attaining the highest and best use for the area surrounding the Madison Avenue Station and act as a working model for other stations along the line within the City of Paterson. This plan will present a strategy to integrate existing and future transit and land use options in a transit-oriented environment that will stimulate economic activity and revitalize the Madison Avenue Study Area.
Work to Date
Since the spring of 2008, the Passaic County Planning Department and the project consulting team, along with NJ Transit and a number of different stakeholders, have been active in the City of Paterson. A number of Public Meetings and Information Sessions were held throughout June and September 2008, to help introduce the Madison Avenue / Commuter Rail Corridor Study to the community.
The first Community Visioning Session was held in December of 2008; two additional Community Visioning Information Sessions followed in February of 2009. The purpose of the visioning meetings was to introduce citizens of Paterson to the study, allow them to ask questions, as well as enable them to provide feedback and voice their concerns about various issues surrounding the study.
