Historic Preservation Grant Program

In order to help preserve the County's historic sites the Passaic County Board of County Commissioners and the New Jersey Historic Trust has partnered for the year 2021 to provide funding for historic preservation activities throughout the County.
Eligible applicants for funds from the program are municipal governments within Passaic County and non-profit organizations as defined under Section 501(c)(3) of the Federal Internal Revenue Code.

Historic Preservation Component
Passaic County, New Jersey has produced a rich heritage of historic and architecturally significant sites, many of which are still in existence today. These sites represent important historic events and trends, significant individuals, numerous architecture styles and illustrate craftsmanship of by-gone eras. In order to help preserve these historic sites the Passaic County Board of County Commissioners approved, the expansion of the existing open space and farmland preservation trust programs to include historic preservation activities.
Eligible applicants for funds from the program are municipal governments within Passaic County and non-profit organizations as defined under Section 501(c)(3) of the Federal Internal Revenue Code.
Eligible properties include individual sites or sites within the boundaries of a historic district which are listed on either the local, State, or National Register of Historic Places. Historic sites, which are certified as eligible by the State Historic Preservation Office or contribute to an eligible historic district, are also eligible.
Acceptable activities include stabilization, rehabilitation, restoration, preservation, and emergency stabilization. Plans and reports related to the implementation of historic preservation projects are NOT eligible for funding for 2019. The eligible activities allowed under this funding program must be in conformance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
The applications are submitted to the office of the Department of Cultural & Historic Affairs. These submissions are reviewed by the for completeness and are then submitted to the Open Space Coordinator and Open Space Advisory Committee for review. This panel reviews and rates each application based on eligibility criteria. The quality of the submitted documents and plans are analyzed and the ability of the applicant to carry out the proposed project is considered in the ranking. The panel also factors in any proposed interpretive programs and the impact the project would have on heritage tourism. The recommendations of the Advisory Committee are then forwarded to the Passaic County Board of County Commissioners who then reviews each of the applications and the Committee's recommendations prior to taking formal action.
